Here we have a Disney sports movie starring Bernie Mac, directed by the guy who came up with the "Whazzup" ads. We have a life lesson, a formula romance and plot inevitability as predictable as gravity. So why don't I totally hate this movie? Because I'm a sucker for baseball comedies and this one is just a notch below Major League. Also, I admit it, Bernie Mac makes me laugh.
The over-the-top moralizing "Mac-isms" on this sitcom might have inspired this tale of a me-first Milwaukee Brewer who gets 3,000 hits and quits to live off the accomplishment. As egomaniacal Stan Ross he gets to chew the scenery with pure selfishness -- starting with the event of his 3,000th hit, where he grabs his landmark baseball out of the hands of a child in the stands and threatens to do him physical violence.
