With its dope humour and its meandering plotlines, the 1995 comedy Friday was a throwback to the Cheech and Chong comedies of two decades earlier.
Directed by F. Gary Gray, it was a day in the South Central life of a regular guy named Craig (Ice Cube). Since he didn't pack a weapon and hang out with gangbangers, the film was also a departure in its portrayal of life in the 'hood. The implication, that life wasn't necessarily as bad or as violent as it is in the movies, made it particularly refreshing.
