Some difficult films need to be made, often for intensely personal reasons only the filmmaker knows. Paul Cox, a man who wrestles with the demons of depression, seems to have needed to make The Diaries Of Vaslav Nijinsky.
Strangely, that does not mean that people need to see it. This impressionistic, lyrical but sometimes awkward and always despairing film is simply not for mainstream audiences. If it was, it would not have taken so long to get so modest a theatrical release. Nijinksy first premiered here at the 2001 Toronto International Film Festival. It opens in Toronto today.
