Novocaine is debut director David Atkins' gloomy crime thriller about a philandering dentist, his anal assistant, his psychotic brother, his trashy lover and a dope fiend.
This film, set up as dark comedy, is supposed to be as wickedly funny as it is taut. That was the logic behind the Toronto film festival's decision to program Novocaine as a gala this year. Well, that and the hope that co-stars Steve Martin and Helena Bonham Carter would give the fest some star oomph.
