Movie Review: Old School

School is definitely out
By LIZ BRAUN

In Old School, three guys in their 30s decide to recapture the essence of college by starting their own fraternity.

Will Ferrell is Frank, a man who gets drunk and runs through town naked, takes an animal tranquilizer in the neck and wrecks a child's birthday party and sings Dust In The Wind off-key. Are you laughing yet? Because that's about it.

Old School is just the latest entry in a long line of pathetic, deeply unfunny movies starring Saturday Night Live staff. Ferrell is joined by Luke Wilson, whose comedic talents still shine through the muck; Vince Vaughn, who mostly looks embarrassed; Juliette Lewis; Jeremy Piven; creepy Craig Kilborn as a creepy boyfriend, and the always amazing Elisha Cuthbert (She appears to have read the script, unlike a few of her peers. Wait. There may not have been a script. We take that back.) And Perrey Reeves and Ellen Pompeo get the female-react-only roles.

The storyline -- Party hardy! -- is well matched by really crappy production values. We counted three laughs. Old School was co-written by director Todd Phillips and Scot Armstrong, the same team that wrote Road Trip.

But why send a middle-aged woman to do a boy's job?

At the screening we attended, several members of the target audience for Old School (young males) laughed long and hard throughout the movie. These guys were convulsed with laughter at several points. Afterward, they walked out talking about Old School, reliving some of the scenes and laughing all over again. So there you go. Chacun a son gout.

If Will Ferrell makes you laugh, Old School is just the ticket.

Those mature enough to have sat through this on the first go-round (National Lampoon's Animal House) are old enough to know they're too old for Old School.

(This film is rated AA)
