Movie Review: Original Kings Of Comedy

Kings can't take crown from Pryor
Though boasting four of the best black comics in the biz, this film by Spike Lee is not going to dethrone Richard Pryor Live as the funniest comedy concert film ever.

Indeed, one of the featured comics, Cedric the Entertainer, liberally borrows some of Pryor's material in a bit about white people in the audience arriving late to find black people in their seats.

Comedy Kings a real slamdunk
People should admit more often when they change their minds. One of the things I changed my mind on was specialized comedy -- all-woman, all-Black, all-Jewish comedy nights.

I used to dismiss these as an excuse for bookers to not book minorities the rest of the time. But the all-black Nubian Disciples Of Pryor shows at Yuk Yuk's turned me around. Comics I'd seen before suddenly were energized playing to all-black crowds. And the audiences were unbelievably enthusiastic.
