One can only assume director Roland Emmerich decided to make a movie about the American Revolutionary War because he so enjoyed the box office fruits of his 1996 blockbuster Independence Day.
That movie likewise stimulated the patriotic fervour of its audience in a successful bid to steal our attention from the abundance of cornball cliches.
