Movie Review: Pitch Black

Pitch Black has shlock value
If Pitch Black is a likable sci-fi thriller, it's because it has the heart of a cheeseball '70s disaster movie beneath the horror trappings of computer-generated mutant bats and winged demon aliens. Think of it as The Towering Inferno in space.

A spacecraft en route to a galaxy called New Mecca has an accident in mid-flight and must land on the hostile terrain of a scorching desert planet (it was filmed in Australia). Fry (Radha Mitchell), a junior pilot, is placed in command when the rest of her flight crew is killed. Just to show she's no Sigourney Weaver-like heroine, one of her first decisions is to jettison the ship's passengers to save herself.

You afraid of the dark?
Be very afraid of the dark in Pitch Black. When the lights go out the things do more than go bump in the night.

I'm not giving anything away. There's an impending doom feeling to this quasi-scary David Twohy sci-fi flick.
