Kurt Gerron was a famous German Jewish actor, perhaps best known for his role in The Blue Angel, in which he co-starred with Marlene Dietrich.
Gerron was at the highest point of his career as an actor and filmmaker when Hitler came to power in Germany, and he moved around Europe one step ahead of the Nazis as the Jewish people had their rights slowly but surely taken away. Gerron eventually was sent to a concentration camp near Prague called Theresienstadt, the place where many Jewish artists, musicians and intellectuals -- those whose absence from the world stage would be noticed -- were sent.
