With dreams of Oscar nominations now dancing in his head, it is astonishing to think that Miramax Films head Harvey Weinstein came close to scuttling The Quiet American by sending it straight to video or suppressing it altogether.
Reportedly, in the aftermath of 9/11 and the onset of extreme U.S. paranoia about its country's foreign policy, Weinstein was troubled by the critical themes embedded in the story and, of course, in English writer Graham Greene's perceptive and caustic 1950s novel.
