There are really two movies in The Rookie, but they're so seamlessly tied it works as a single experience.

From the time he was a youngster growing up on army bases, Jim Morris dreamed of being a professional baseball player. He was a great little-league pitcher and actually got a shot at playing pro ball, but wrenched his shoulder.

When Jim Morris had his pitching career stopped cold by a severe shoulder injury -- he was playing for Milwaukee Brewers Class A team -- he went home to small-town Texas and taught high-school chemistry. He also coached the school's baseball team.

To motivate his ball players, Morris told the boys that if they won the district championship, he'd try out one more time for baseball's major leagues. They did, and he did.
