Movie Review: Rules Of Engagement

Engagement breaks rules of common sense
I like Sam Jackson. And I have great hope that director William Friedkin will once again demonstrate the talent he exhibited making films such as The French Connection and The Exorcist. So I feel bad about not liking their new movie.

 Rules of Engagement looks like a sturdy piece of work on the surface. It begins with a harrowing sequence in which siege is laid to a U.S. embassy in Yemen. A crowd of Muslim protesters throw rocks and Molotov cocktails at the building. Snipers open fire, shooting randomly. The frantic ambassador (Ben Kingsley) is in fear for his life and the safety of his wife (Anne Archer) and young son.

Not at all engaging
The military courtroom thriller Rules of Engagement is a product of the Clinton presidency.

 It wallows in the belief that everyone in Washington is morally bankrupt.
