Something magical happened for Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce at the 2002 Toronto film festival. After a decade in Hollywood, he went back to his roots and made two exceptional films, both of which galvanized audiences.
One is The Quiet American (its release here is pending). The other is Rabbit-Proof Fence, which opens today. Set in the scrub desert of the state of Western Australia in 1931, it is the true story of three Aboriginal girls and their 1,500-mile epic journey to be reunited with their mothers.
