Music is the universal language -- and it's a comically maudlin dirge -- in local director Guy Maddin's vaudevillian melodrama The Saddest Music in the World.
Set during the depths of the Depression in the World Capital of Sorrow -- a surreally wintry Winnipeg, where houses are buried in snow so deep only crooked gables poke out of the drifts -- the black-and-white talkie is a giddy celebration of despair in all its wretched glory.
