WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Did Tom Cruise accept the wrong mission? The superstar mulled a number of projects after Valkyrie -- including Salt -- before ultimately signing onto Knight and Day, which has been one of the summer's box-office disappointments.
"We thought it was a curious decision to leave this project, I'll say that," says Salt producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura of Cruise's exit.
After the Mission: Impossible actor dropped out, the role was revised for Angelina Jolie, who plays a rogue CIA agent.
Not that Cruise was alone in questioning Salt's worth.
"We went through five-and-a-half years of no one wanting to buy this script," di Bonaventura says. "It was one of the most frustrating development processes I've ever been through. We got passed by every studio at least two or three times along the way. It always defied my understanding. I had been through The Matrix, which was a very frustrating process, too, but that one you could understand why people weren't getting it. This one, I could never really understand it. It's a great movie star role."
