While the calamitous bursting of the dot-com economy's bubble has practically become fodder for late-night talk show jokes, nobody has really given those of us outside Silicon Valley and the walls of the NYSE a glimpse into the world of Internet startups and splashdowns.

Until now, that is. Startup.com, a documentary produced by award-winning filmmakers Chris Hegedus and husband D A Pennebaker, traces the meteoric rise and flaming descent of one such e-company, from Big Idea to Bigger Disaster. It opens today at the Garneau Theatre.

Kaleil Isaza Tuzman and Tom Herman have been friends since childhood. Late in 1998, they founded govWorks, a dot-com company designed to facilitate communication between regular folk and local government.

In July of 1999, the company had grown enormously from a couple of buddies to 25 people. Within a year, govWorks.com had 250 on staff.
