Max is visiting his grandmother in Alsace for the summer. He's a thoughtful kid with a passion for 'manouche' (gypsy) music, and he decides to visit the local caravans to see if he can barter for a guitar.

He gets the guitar. He also encounters a girl his age named Swing (Lou Rech). She is so self-assured and brave that Max at first thinks Swing is a boy.
