Like science's quest for absolute zero, FX movies continue to break new ground in the elimination of humans from movies -- paving the way for the day when they can bring in virtual actors and be done with it.
Thirteen Ghosts -- a sterile, noisy and gory remake of the 1960 William Castle drive-in classic -- is as close to being free of character development and warm-bloodedness as the state of the art allows. The characters are introduced in a scene that takes a couple of minutes, the ghosts are let loose, and we're off to the FX races. By comparison, of character development, Scream was Anna Karenina.
