Taboo -- or Gohatto in Japanese -- is a movie that explores the paradox of homosexual urges among the fiercely machismo samurai warriors of 19th-century Japan.
Within the film, the issue itself is a taboo. In the English subtitles and presumably in the spoken Japanese, homosexuality is described by the characters either as a kind of "leaning" or simply as "love among men" -- both coy terms and delivered with a sly smile or a smirk, depending on the intent.
