Movie Review: Tape

Tale of the Tape
For a movie set completely inside a dingy motel room, Tape is a thrilling piece of experimental cinema.

This is the sticky situation in which Tape's main characters find themselves: Slobby Vince (Ethan Hawke) arrives in Lansing, Mich., to attend the film premiere of his old high school pal John (Robert Sean Leonard). Vince, though, has other plans -- after they spar verbally, he manages to get John to admit that he date-raped Amy (Uma Thurman), Vince's old girlfriend, back in senior year. What's more, Vince secretly tapes John's confession that he used "excessive linguistic pressure" to coerce Amy into having "rough sex." It seems Vince would like John to apologize to Amy for the incident -- and unluckily for John, Vince has invited her, too, over to his room.
