Movie Review: Truth About Charlie

A bumbling but charming charade
The Truth About Charlie is being billed as a remake of the romantic thriller Charade -- but that isn't quite true. The new Jonathan Demme film is certainly based on the 1963 film that starred Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, but this outing is an odd marriage of the original film and Demme's own passion for the '60s films of the French New Wave, and particularly Truffaut. The general air of homage is sometimes charming and sometimes just bumbling.

In The Truth About Charlie, Thandie Newton plays Regina Lambert, an unhappily married woman who intends to file for divorce. She returns to her home in Paris from a holiday and finds the place stripped bare and trashed. Worse yet, she can't divorce her husband, because he's dead.

The Truth About the remake
It's important to stress that Jonathan Demme's The Truth About Charlie is not a remake of Stanley Donen's classy 1963 romantic mystery Charade, but rather, inspired by it.

Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant originally played the would-be lovers pursued by the likes of heavies Walter Matthau, James Coburn and George Kennedy.
