In sub flicks, a distinct 'sub'-genre of war movies, there are conventions in both atmosphere and ritual: Each plays on isolation, claustrophobia, the appeal of a man's steely gaze into the periscope, the fright of waiting for depth charges to blow, the added dangers of diving too deep in a glorified tin can, the unique dynamic of a chain of command in such a small place.
