In 10 short years filmmaker Stephen Sommers has gone from writing and directing a $27-million movie like Disney's live-action Jungle Book to helming the $200-million extravaganza Van Helsing.

In the ensuing years, Sommers turned out The Mummy and The Mummy Returns whose combined worldwide box-office is edging $ 1 billion. This explains why Universal Pictures gave him full control for Van Helsing and perhaps the deepest pockets in the studio's history.

Van Helsing is a spine-tingling, eye-popping extravaganza for kids. Too bad the movie is also brain dead, like Frankenstein's mutant creation before the lightning strikes.

As a result, Stephen Sommers' new Gothic monster mash, more so than his remake of The Mummy and much like The Mummy Returns, is all about the visuals.
