Vatel, Roland Joffe's sprawling movie about a moody chef, a god-like king and a fabulous feast, garnered an Oscar nomination for best art direction.

No kidding. The movie, under the guidance of production designer Jean Rebasse, looks like an animated painting come alive from the court of the legendary Sun King himself. That would be Louis XIV, who is the king depicted in this 17th-century saga.
