In 1934, tragic French filmmaker Jean Vigo made a lyrical masterpiece called L'Atalante, the story of star-crossed lovers on a barge floating down the River Seine.

I say tragic because Vigo died the same year, at the tender age of 29. He had tuberculosis, which had tormented him for years and severely curtailed his career.
