Although it leans a bit too much to the Thomas Hardy school of storytelling for this viewer, The Widow Of St. Pierre is a dignified and subtle drama about people with the courage to risk everything for their beliefs and ideals.
Based on a true story, the film is set on the tiny island of Saint-Pierre around 1850. Daniel Auteuil plays the French military commandant and Juliette Binoche is his wife, Madame La. She is a wise, beautiful woman who seems somewhat mysterious to most of the locals; he is an open-minded man and highly respected, but his obvious love for his wife makes him a bit suspect among other officials.
