Movie Review: Young Adam

Fine affair
It's taken almost two years for David Mackenzie's psychological thriller Young Adam to reach Canadian cinema screens.

Wisely, Mackenzie refused to allow censors to snip away at his film because it features brief male nudity and intense sex scenes of fevered and guilt-ridden passion.

Up and Adam
Young Adam is a morally ambiguous fable based on the '50s novel by Alexander Trocchi. The passage of time has robbed the story of much of what must have been shock value, and yet, this study of a man who acts instinctively -- in the midst of strict social and moral rules aimed at eradicating instinctive behaviour -- is still fascinating.

Joe is adrift, literally and figuratively. Joe (Ewan McGregor) works on a barge that moves along the canals between Glasgow and Edinburgh, living with Les (Peter Mullan) and his wife Ella (Tilda Swinton) and their child.
