Zelary is a story of unexpected love, set in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia during WWII. The film is based on Jozova Hanule, the autobiographical novella by Kvita Legatova and centres on the unusual relationship between a young city woman and a middle-aged bachelor in a mountain village.
The story begins in 1943. Eliska (Ana Geislerova, whose performance in Zelary won her the 2004 Czech Gold Lion for Best Actress) is a student doctor working in the city. She and her lover are also active in the resistance.
