What it lacks in depth and substance, the Chinese film Zhou Yu's Train makes up for in mood and elegance.
But that still leaves director Sun Zhou's contemporary love fable ranking as a minor league effort from a country which has produced a string of major films (including the forthcoming Hero, opening later this month). Zhou Yu's Train, which screened in the 2003 Toronto filmfest as a special presentation, plays here in Mandarin with English subtitles.
