CD Review: The Replacements: Don't...
Still awaiting a box set

The Replacements
Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?
(Rhino/Warner)

Replacements fans know from frustration. First there was the frustration of watching singer-guitarist Paul Westerberg and his magnificent, mischievous Minneapolis misfits suffer through a career that could not have been more cursed had it been built on an Indian burial ground.

Then came the frustration of hearing 1997's All For Nothing / Nothing For All anthology, which unearthed a slew of rarities but ignored half their albums. Now there's the frustration from Rhino's single-disc set Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?, which wisely draws from all their discs but foolishly forgets about those bonus cuts, along with essentials like Androgynous, Hold My Life and The Ledge.

Of course, it does have two big extras: A pair of new tunes from the three surviving 'Mats. Message to the Boys and Pool & Dive -- both supposedly penned back in the day but never recorded -- are typically ramshackle rockers from Westerberg's poignant poison pen. They don't totally erase Don't You Know's other minor flaws.

But they do help ease the frustration of waiting for the long-rumoured and long-overdue Replacements box.
