Victoria pops into 'Peg
By DAVID SCHMEICHEL - Winnipeg Sun

Victoria Beckham at the Winnipeg airport. (Marcel Cretain, SUN)

WINNIPEG - A quick smile, a few mumbled words, and former Spice Girl Victoria "Posh" Beckham was outta here, departing Winnipeg with just as little fanfare as when she slipped in unannounced a night earlier.

"It's been lovely," was all Beckham -- the wife of famed soccer player David Beckham -- said to the tiny crowd of media types gathered outside the Winnipeg International Airport yesterday morning, before being whisked up an escalator and through the security check.

Beckham arrived in Winnipeg shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, and left a day and a half later, boarding an Air Canada flight destined for Toronto, according to an airport source.

Following a business meeting with Western Glove Works president Michael Silver, Beckham was driven to the airport by Silver himself, in a navy blue Porsche Cayenne.

She waited in the back of the vehicle along with another woman, covering the right side of her face with her hand when a photographer tried to shoot her picture through the window.

After airport staffers carted her carry-on luggage away, Beckham -- dressed in a black tank top, skintight white jeans, Jackie O-style sunglasses and clutching a shiny black handbag -- made her way into the airport, initially ignoring reporters' questions but turning to bestow a quick bit of praise on the city at the last minute.

A few air kisses with Silver were swapped, and then Beckham was on her way, along with the second woman (who wore jeans under a black dress with micro-dots), and a male handler dressed in a navy blazer and shades.

Though the tiny Beckham -- mother of children Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz -- is one of the most photographed women in the world, her appearance at the airport yesterday drew little interest from fellow travellers, save for a pre-teen who piped up, "Who was that?" as she made her way to a VIP lounge.

But Beckham's visit did catch the attention of the British media, namely a reporter with Sunday People who called the Sun newsroom seeking details of the ex-Spice Girl's visit.

"Why was she there? What was she doing? Where did she stay?" he asked.

Airport spokeswoman Christine Alongi said Beckham would pass through the same checks as other travellers, regardless of her celebrity status.

"Anybody who comes through is subject to the same procedures as everyone else," Alongi said.

"Unless you're exempt because you're a premier or ... a king or queen or something."
