The Canadian rocker plucked from poverty to become the new lead singer of INXS says he has been fired by the band without warning.
J.D. Fortune, 35, told Entertainment Tonight Canada he was axed from the band with a handshake at a Hong Kong airport.
“I found myself really alone because I had travelled with these guys for 23 months," he told the entertainment program.
Fortune landed the rock gig by auditioning for the band on the reality TV show “Rock Star: INXS” back in 2005. At the time, Fortune was homeless and living out of his car.
The band had been looking for a replacement for original singer Michael Hutchence, who was found dead in a Sydney hotel room in 1997.
The Fortune-fronted INXS went on a world tour in 2006 and 2007 in support of the album “Switch.” The CD spawned the hits “Pretty Vegas” and “Afterglow.”
Fortune tells ET Canada he is once again living in his car, after spending his savings on a solo album, “The Death of a Motivational Speaker.”
A spokesperson for INXS has declined comment.
