Lavigne, Whibley not back together

LOS ANGELES — The hopeful, romantic buzz around Canadian rockers Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley has been they’re putting their divorce on hold and getting back together.

The Ground Zero reason for the gossip is this: Lavigne had a jealous fit when she bumped into one of Whibley’s girlfriends, Hanna Beth Merjos, in a Hollywood nightclub back in February.

But one jealous rage does not a rekindled romance make.

It did serve to get them on speaking terms again (yes, she still cares!) — and back collaborating in the recording studio. (They’ve been procrastinating finishing Lavigne’s very late new album.)

Since February’s blowout, they’ve also started hanging publicly again, which started the get-together rumours.

Tongues really wagged this past week because they had dinner last Sunday in Hollywood before visiting a tattoo parlour to get some more ink together.

However, sources say the reason for Sunday’s dinner and tattoo party — there were at least four other friends with them, by the way — was they were celebrating finishing another track on the album.

“It really doesn’t look like they’ll get back together,” said a well-placed source. “They thought about it for a while, but, the fact is, the thrill is kinda gone romantically.

“The good news is that they’re very good friends again.”

The reality seems to be that Lavigne is dating cute Hollywood frat boy Brody Jenner while Whibley plays the field with various blonds, redheads and brunettes.

Meanwhile, Whibley, 30, is said to have his cousin, Matt Whibley, living with him in a rented studio near Hollywood while Lavigne, 25, stays in the couple’s big multi-million dollar Bel-Air mansion with her best girlfriend, Jamie.

As for the divorce ... the papers are still making their way through the Los Angeles Superior Court and it could be signed off by a judge this summer.

Happily, it has taken an amiable turn. And this is another reason they were able to stop their bickering and start working together.

There were rumours months back that Whibley was asking for spousal support — a nasty legal term that would mean Lavigne would have to pay him big sums of alimony for a long, long time even though they have no kids together — but multiple sources say that’s incorrect.

“His divorce lawyers were really talking in his ear about getting this and getting that. Don’t forget, it’s in the lawyer’s interest to get a big fight going, they charge by the hour.

“Did Deryck listen at first because he was angry that Avril walked out?” says another source close to the Sum 41 musician.

“Maybe for a second,” said the source.

“But then he put his anger aside and wouldn’t hear any more talk of it. Deryck makes plenty of his own money. In no way is he a leech.”

A lot of rock fans would like to see the fairytale romance of Lavigne and Whibley end with a happy-ever-after.

But happy stories end in different ways. At least their breakup, which started out bitterly, seems to be ending on a collaborative musical note.

LETTING OFF STEAM: Corey Haim’s best buddy, Corey Feldman took a little heat from the celebrity website TMZ for partying last Saturday with two platinum blonds just 10 days after Haim’s premature death.

But another party-goer, who saw Feldman at Club Voyeur in Hollywood, said the 38-year-old actor was just trying to let off some steam.

“In between drinks he kept talking about his buddy dying and not knowing what to do,” said a source who bumped into him there.

“To me,” she said. “He seemed scared and really sad.”
