DJ Champion battling cancer
By QMI Agency

DJ Champion, aka, Maxime Morin. (Handout)

QUEBEC CITY - DJ Champion, one of Quebec's best-know musicians, is suffering from a form of blood cancer, his management team and a close friend confirmed on Sunday.

"It is the most treatable type of blood cancer," said a close friend of DJ Champion aka Maxime Morin.

The award-winning musician's management also issued a statement.

"Maxime Morin, aka DJ Champion, as well as his Bonsound management team, announce this morning the diagnosis recently given to him by his team of doctors; Maxime Morin is suffering from a blood cancer (lymphoma)," the statement said, adding that Morin is "optimistic, courageous and has been under medical observation for several weeks."

A more recent statement posted to the musician's website on Monday thanked fans for their support after many had taken to Twitter to give the musician their best wishes.

"Maxime Morin would like to thank you for all the warm wishes he received since the announcement of his battle against blood cancer,” read the statement, which also cleared up a misconception about the disease he is battling.

"We would like to take this opportunity to clarify one simple fact : DJ Champion isn't suffering from leukemia, he has lymphoma blood cancer, it's a different illness."

It has also been confirmed by Bonsound that Morin has already started treatment.

DJ Champion had previously put a stop to his current tour, citing health problems, a report that lead to much speculation.

"After a new recommendation from the doctor, Maxime Morin, aka DJ Champion, and his management team Bonsound are very sad to announce the cancellation of all confirmed concert dates on his agenda," read the statement, issued on June 7.

DJ Champion made a name for himself in 2005 with the release of his album "Chill Em All", which sold more than 100,000 copies. On stage, Morin was accompanied by singer Betty Bonifassi (Triplettes de Belleville, Beast), and a band, DJ Champion and his G-Strings. His energetic shows and his catchy melodies shot him to fame on the festival circuit throughout Quebec and worldwide.
