The Los Angeles police officers who leaked a photograph of a bruised and beaten Rihanna to media outlets in 2009 will not face criminal charges.

Prosecutors have abandoned attempts to charge the culprits after a three-year investigation into the incident, which took place in the days following the singer's pre-Grammy Awards bust-up with then-boyfriend Chris Brown.

Officials at the L.A. Police Department concluded that at least two female officers were involved in the leak, according to the Los Angeles Times -- and one of the offenders was an award-winning cop.

Blanca Lopez and Rebecca Reyes are scheduled to face LAPD disciplinary panels in August, and could lose their jobs on the force.

The shocking Rihanna image, leaked from police evidence to website TMZ, served to vilify Brown, who had attacked Rihanna during a row over an alleged text from another woman.

He was later charged with assault, sentenced to hard labour community service and ordered to stay away from his ex.

The latter punishment has since been relaxed and Brown recently reunited with Rihanna in the studio to record two new tracks.
