John Mayer banned from singing

John Mayer - DJDM/WENN.COM

John Mayer has been ordered not to sing again for six months after undergoing throat surgery last week.

The rocker underwent an operation to remove a granuloma from his vocal cords last Monday and is now recovering at home. The surgery comes nearly a year after he first went under the knife last October in a bid to resolve ongoing problems with his voice.

Mayer's representative confirmed the news to CNN.com and the star has since opened up about his medical issues in a post on his Tumblr.com blog.

The musician reveals he has been ordered to rest his voice for several months and is banned from singing until next year.

He writes, "Well, here I am. Silent for the next few months, no singing for probably six, but all signs point to this being the last step in getting to perform again. Back to notebooks and iPad to communicate for the time being. Zen living at its finest... so if you see me out and about and I don't answer you when you say hello, I'm not ignoring you. Promise."

Mayer goes on to tell fans he will be keeping them up-to-date as he battles his latest health crisis, adding, "I'll try and post more on here, but I've gotten really good at keeping my thoughts to myself and I don't exactly see anybody starving for my take on things. But it might be fun to offer some kind of window into this very odd and slightly beautiful time...

"I know I'm not the only person hoping that six months from now they'll have a chance to do what they love so much, so good luck with your thing too."
