Justin Bieber has reached out to the family of a paparazzo who was killed while photographing the singer's car in Los Angeles, insisting his "thoughts and prayers" are with the victim's relatives.
A photographer spotted the superstar's Ferrari on New Year's Day when it was pulled over by police.
The driver of the luxury Ferrari, believed to be a friend of Bieber's, was questioned by cops and the snapper got out of his vehicle to take pictures of the incident, but he was knocked over and killed by another car.
Bieber has now sent his condolences to the victim's family, and has also called for "meaningful legislation" to restrict the actions of paparazzi.
In a statement, he writes, "While I was not present nor directly involved with this tragic accident, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim.
"Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves."
Miley Cyrus has addressed the incident on her Twitter.com page, writing in a series of posts, "Hope this paparazzi/JB accident brings on some changes in '13. Paparazzi are dangerous! Wasn't Princess Di (British royal Diana, Princess of Wales) enough of a wake up call?!
"It is unfair for anyone to put this on to Justin's conscious (sic) as well! This was bound to happen! Your mom teaches u (sic) when your (sic) a child not to play in the street! The chaos that comes with the paparazzi acting like fools makes it impossible for anyone to make safe choices."
