The Mars Volta splitting up

Cult rockers The Mars Volta are splitting up after the departure of singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala.

The frontman took to his Twitter.com page to break the news, and appeared to blame his bandmate Omar Rodriguez-Lopez for neglecting the group while working on new side project band Bosnian Rainbows.

He writes, "I tried my hardest to keep it going but Bosnian Rainbows was what we all got instead. I can't sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta... For the record I tried my hardest to get a full scale North American tour going for (last album) Noctourniquet but Omar did not want to."

Bixler-Zavala confirmed he is working on a solo album before acknowledging fans for their support over the years, adding, "I honestly thank all of you for buying our records and coming to our shows. You guys were a blast to play in front of... All I can do is move forward with my music and just be happy that Mars Volta ever happened at all. God Damn we had a blast."

Rodriguez-Lopez and Bixler-Zavala formed experimental band The Mars Volta in 2001 after their previous group At The Drive-In broke down.

At The Drive-In reunited last year and were one of the headliners at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in April.
