Singer Norah Jones stepped up to accept a special posthumous Grammy Award on behalf of her late father Ravi Shankar at a special ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The celebrated sitar player was publicly announced as the recipient of the 2013 Lifetime Achievement honour just hours after his death at the age of 92 in December, and the prize was given out ahead of the main show on Sunday.

The musician's daughters, Jones and Anoushka Shankar, stepped up to accept the trophy on their father's behalf during the pre-Grammy Awards ceremony at L.A.'s Wilshire Ebell Theatre.

Jones, who has won nine Grammys of her own, said of her father, "We know he was very excited to be receiving this award. We really miss him. He lived and breathed music. He was tapping out rhythms on the breakfast table... We are very happy to accept the award for him."

Her sister added, "It was 60 days ago today that he passed away. It's kind of difficult to be standing up here, like Norah said, I am thrilled that he knew about this award before he passed away at least. But I wish we weren't standing up here for him."

Jazz musician Charlie Haden, 75, also collect a Lifetime Achievement Award, while singer/songwriter Carole King and The Temptations also received awards in honour of their musical careers.

Other posthumous awards went to pianist Glenn Gould, blues rocker Lightnin' Hopkins and country singer Patti Page.
