Thousands of music fans are flocking to the hot California desert as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is set to kick off Friday.

The annual event, which runs over two weekends, begins its first day with co-headliners Blur and Stone Roses, along with Modest Mouse, Jurassic 5 and Yeah Yeah Yeahs all gracing one of the five stages on the vast Empire Polo Club grounds.

Saturday's lineup includes Phoenix, New Order, the xx, Sigur Ros and the newly-reunited Postal Service, which features Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard.

Sunday wraps up with Vampire Weekend, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Wu-Tang Clan, the Lumineers, and top bananas, the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

For the Chili Peppers, it marks their third time headlining the festival. They played in 2003, drawing its biggest crowd, and helping establish Coachella as one of the premiere music events in the world.
