Rapper Lil Wayne is adamant he did not mean to trample on the American flag during the filming of his latest music video.

The hip-hop star came under fire after footage emerged online showing him standing on the country's beloved Stars and Stripes during the God Bless Amerika shoot in New Orleans, Louisiana over the weekend.

The incident sparked outrage among American patriots, who accused Lil Wayne of disrespecting his home nation, but the star insists trampling on the banner was an accident.

In a post on Twitter.com, he writes, "I didn't step on the flag on purpose! It's a scene in a video where the flag drops behind me and after it drop (sic) it's just there as I perform."
