Artist: Aaliyah

Aaliyah's sales soar in wake of singer's death
By PAUL CANTIN

Masked rockers Slipknot had a stranglehold on the top of the Canadian retail album charts this week with a number one debut -- but their achievement was nearly upstaged by the fall-out from the death of R&B singer Aaliyah.

Slipknot's new disc "Iowa" sold 32,366 copies during its first week of release, making it the week's top-selling album in the country, according to data from SoundScan Canada.

The band was well ahead of off-beat Icelandic singer Bjork's brand-new disc "Vespertine," which sold 13,914 during its debut week, landing in second place.

Alicia Keys' "Songs In A Minor" (13,234) fell one place to third, while Destiny's Child tumbled from first to fourth with "Survivor" (13,113). Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" (10,635) debuted at #5.

Despite those sales achievements, the most remarkable aspect of the week's chart is the effect Aaliyah's death in a Bahamas plane crash just over one week ago had on her chart sales. Just two weeks ago, the singer's seven-week-old, self-titled album sat at #94 in Canada. The plane crash that claimed her life occurred a week ago Saturday, too late to have much impact on last week's chart, which saw the album at #71.

But in this week's chart, "Aaliyah" vaulted from #71 to #6, selling 10,374 copies, compared to the previous week's total of 1,880.

In the U.S., the effect was even more dramatic. Two weeks ago, "Aaliyah" sat at #27. Last week the album held on to #19. This week, the disc shot to #1 on sales of 305,911, compared to the previous week's sales of 62,081.

That was enough to send Blige's "No More Drama" into second place on sales of 294,351 and Slipknot's "Iowa" to third with 254,936 copies sold. Bjork's "Vespertine," which debuted at #2 in Canada, entered the U.S. chart at #19.

Back in Canada, the "American Pie 2" soundtrack (9,319) dropped from fifth to seventh; Blink 182's "Take Off Your Pants And Jacket" (9,247) fell from third to eighth.

Sum41's "All Killer, No Filler" (8,171) broke into the Canadian top 10, moving from #12 to #9, while their earlier release, "Half Hour Of Power" got some residual buoyancy, entering the chart at #176.

Enya's "Day Without Rain" (7,889) moved down a spot to #10.

Other notable Canadian chart debuts this week include Lara Fabian's "Nue" at #24, Project Wyze's "Misfits, Strangers, Liars, Friends" at #27, Afroman's "Good Times" at #32, Brian McKnight's "Superhero" at #33, Toby Keith's "Pull My Chain" at #47, RZA's "Digital Bobby" at #63, Puddle Of Mud's "Come Clean" at #66, and Juvenile's "Project English" at #81.
