My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go
(Sonic Unyon)
If bigger is better, biggest is best. That has long appeared to be the motto of Aereogramme. But the ambitious Scottish indie-rockers have never taken it to heart -- and put it into practice -- the way they do on their third album.
My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go is massive and epic and grand and monumental and sweeping and cinematic and romantic as its overly wordy title would suggest.
The melodies are rich and bittersweet. The vocals are yearning and earnest. The backing tracks are impeccably handcrafted from layer upon layer of guitars and keyboards and strings.
And everything is meticulously arranged to within an inch of its life, ebbing and flowing with the supple grace of a ballet. You can hear bits of Radiohead and Sigur Ros and Coldplay and Snow Patrol in each of these 10 songs.
Trouble is, for some reason, it all adds up to less than its wonderful parts -- after several listenings, we still had trouble recalling any of these tunes after the fact.
Bigger may be better -- but Aerogramme's My Heart can also leave you wondering how much is too much.
