Album Review: Air

EVERYBODY HERTZ
By DARRYL STERDAN

EVERYBODY HERTZ
Air
(Virgin / EMI)

Call it Recirculated Air. For this remix album, the French electronica duo rounded up the usual slate of hip producers to revamp the tracks from their album The 10,000 Hz Legend. Well, not all the tracks. Just three: Don't Be Light, People in the City and How Does it Make You Feel? Which kinda seems strange and cheap at first, but makes a little more sense after listening. For instance, disco oddball Mr. Oizo invests Don't Be Light with his usual bleepy Gallic giddiness, while hip-hop hotshots The Neptunes roll it up into a joint of sticky-sweet soul and somebody called The Hacker pumps it up into a techno-house booty-shaker. The point? Maybe to show that Air's tunes have enough depth for endless reinterpretation. But the best reworking comes from the boys themselves, who offer up a live, full-band version of People in the City on the enhanced CD . It's the only real breath of fresh Air here. (More on: Air).
