CALGARY -- Hmm, man feelings.
Aggressive, emotional, screeching, air punching, man feelings in all their glory.
Screamo-tional Canadian punk rockers, Alexisonfire, along with Anti-Flag, Saosin, and The Bled are in town this week taking over the University of Calgary's MacEwan Hall with their punkcore, yet touchy feely, sometimes political, tunes.
If men were to have their own version of Lilith Fair, this would be it.
Unbridled, post-hardcore emotions were spearing and piercing in all directions, echoing off of every wall and bouncing into the cold night air yesterday as George Pettit, lead screamer of Alexisonfire, let out his angstful cry: "Raise up your hands and sing along."
We Are The Sound was the No. 2 song of the show, which carried through late into the evening.
Tonight will likely be no different as the four bands once again take the stage at U of C.
The tour was supposed to arrive in Calgary for Monday night, but the harsh weather and poor conditions had the boys hold up in Golden B.C. yesterday, waiting for the road to Alberta to open.
They weathered through and made it a day late, finally arriving to hit the stage at 10:15 p.m. last night. Alexisonfire played a tight set with just as many melodic background vocals from Dallas Green as screamy lead chants by Pettit.
Green's side project, City and Colour, a critically acclaimed singer songwriter- type endeavour, couldn't be more different from the likes of Alexisonfire.
But, despite the contrast, Green's harmonizing vocals are integral to the act, as are Pettit's painful yelps.
It should be noted at this point that Pettit, who is trying to distance the Ontario-bred band from the stigma of being labelled a "screamo" act, would hate the above descriptions of his yelly, albeit oddly rich, vocals.
He has said on several occasions "screamo" is the past, and not something the band can relate to anymore.
So then, George, why the heck do you continue to scream so darn much, huh?
Veteran act Anti-Flag (the Pittsburgh band has been around in some form since 1988) combined with newbie's Saosin, The Bled and headliner Alexisonfire made for the perfect, ear-piercing, night of punk.
