SMOKE RINGS IN THE DARK
Gary Allan
If Chris Isaak had a country cousin, it would be Gary Allan. Allan has the same ability to create sexy and fabulously moody tunes, all the while staying true to his country roots. This album is original, yet comfortable in a traditional sort of way. This is achieved thanks in part to covers such as Buddy Brock's Don't Tell Mama and Del Shannon's Runaway, which Allan gives a funky '90s feel. The title track has caused such admiration that the CD's original release date of next year was moved up. A hit-in-waiting is Lovin' You Against My Will. Other standouts are the nostalgic breakup toe-tapper Sorry, the drinking-his-sorrow-away tune Bourbon Borderline, the self-acceptance song Learning to Live With Me, as well as Cryin' For Nothin' and Greenfields.
