HOLLYWOOD -- There's nothing sweeter than being a 30-year overnight sensation.
Just ask Toronto high school buddies Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner, who are enjoying every second of their incredible resurgence thanks to a little film called Anvil! The Story of Anvil.
The inspirational rockumentary, tracking the influential metal band's humble rise and not-so-gentle plunge into obscurity, is shaping up to be one of the most talked about -- and certainly best reviewed -- releases of the year.
A break-out hit at the Sundance Film Festival, the film, described by many as a real-life Spinal Tap, has already grossed over $278,000 since bowing in limited release last month and has been building quite the little fan base.
Count fellow Canadians Keanu Reeves and Ryan Gosling among the groupies, as well as everybody from John Mayer, Rob Thomas and Maroon 5 to Dustin Hoffman(!) and Mandy Moore.
A friend was at a recent Q&A screening attended by the band and the audience went absolutely nuts.
Wisely striking while Anvil is hot, Kudlow and Reiner have been busy making appearances and taking meetings.
Tonight they'll be performing a mini midnight concert at an L.A. theatre following a special screening of the film, which marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Sacha Gervasi (he wrote Steven Spielberg's The Terminal), then tomorrow night they'll be the big draw on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Welcome back, guys. Contrary to the lyrics in one of your songs, maybe innocence and sentiment aren't in permanent retirement.
