THE DISCOVERY OF A WORLD INSIDE THE MOONE
The Apples In Stereo
(SpinART)
As part of the influential Elephant 6 collective of bands, Denver's Apples In Stereo have always sounded almost conventional when compared with their colleagues (particularly psychedelic-folk noise-mongers Neutral Milk Hotel and Oliver Tremor Control).
That said, the group's clear obsession with Revolver-era Beatles and Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, among other things gilded and/or trippy, saw to it that their low recording budgets and lo-fi gear couldn't restrain their idealistic pop charm. Discovery ... finds the Apples stretching out even further, taking their usual arsenal of jangly guitars, boppy harmonies, arcane electronics, hand-claps and horns out for a psychedelic-soul manoeuvre that would be a total mess if the band, namely lead beardo Robert Schneider, didn't have such a keen sense of how to make it all so darned catchy.
Recommended for fans of: Beck, Sloan, The Velvet Underground's Loaded.
