Album Review: Arctic Monkeys

FAVOURITE WORST NIGHTMARE
Monkeys make good second impression
By -- Sun Media

Arctic Monkeys
Favourite Worst Nightmare
(Domino/Outside)

Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner knows how to make an entrance.

Don't take our word for it. Check out Favourite Worst Nightmare and hear for yourself. Nearly every one of its dozen songs sports a killer opening line. Like "Do the bad thing -- take off your wedding ring." Or "This house is a circus, berserk as f--k. We tend to see that as perk, though." Or our fave: "You used to get it in your fishnets. Now you only get it in your nightdress."

Of course, it's no surprise Turner likes to make a good first impression. That is precisely what the singer-guitarist and the rest of these Sheffield upstarts did with their first CD -- the superbly titled Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, which vaulted them overnight from obscurity to the biggest buzz band of 2006.

Barely 15 months later, the Monkeys are back with a sequel that shows they can make a good second impression too. The 37-minute Favourite Worst Nightmare has everything that Whatever People Say had: The spiky guitar chords and two-finger licks. The nimble basslines and thumpy drums. The jerky beats and wiry adolescent energy. The distorted down-the-pub vocals and cheeky character sketches of dirty Herberts and slags and blokes sporting T-shirts and ties.

That's good news on its own. But here's better news: This isn't just a game of Monkeys see, Monkeys redo. Everything is cranked up just a notch this time around. The loud and fast cuts rock a bit louder and faster. The lean and mean tunes cut slightly leaner and meaner. The dreamy, atmospheric ballads are a touch dreamier and more atmospheric. And all of them sound a little more focused, confident and sharply crafted than their predecessors.

Start with the searing single Brianstorm, which sets the bar with its mosquito-buzz surf guitars and sprinting groove. Then get a load of firecrackers like Teddy Picker, D is For Dangerous, Balaclava and Fluorescent Adolescent, along with more sentimental fare like Only Ones Who Know and Do Me a Favour.

By the time you get to the end of the closer 505 -- a gently glimmering ballad that slowly morphs into a chiming sendoff -- you'll realize these guys know how to make an exit too.

And you'll be eager to hear what kind of a third impression they make.
