Album Review: Backstreet Boys

SHAPE OF MY HEART (single)
By MIKE ROSS

SHAPE OF MY HEART (single)
Backstreet Boys
(Jive/Zomba)

Speaking of human clones ...

Try washing down a meal of Radiohead with a taste of Backstreet Boys. You'd better have a strong stomach.

On this empty-headed love song from the forthcoming album, Black & Blue (out Nov. 21), the boys are obviously going for mid-tempo maturity - the character is begging forgiveness for some unspecified wrong against his significant other - and yet cling almost desperately to the sappy, syrupy performance and production that has marked all their recordings.

Sigh. Backstreet's back ...
